Tip of the ice-cream - guitars?!

well, not so much a guide for other people than a guide to help me remember stuff that I've learnt about guitars, most things in here are logical so if you're reading this you might as well skip this post =X

The difficulty of guitars depends on the song itself as well as the genre, personally I haven't played anything but metal, but punk is a good genre to start with if you're playing electric guitar like I am.

Guitars
Well, briefly, there are 3 main types:
Classical
Acoustic
Electric

I'm only learning electric so some things that I say may be specific on this type of guitar. Of course if the tuning is right, the sound will come out similar on all the guitar types but there will be differences on how the musics sound. A good example is my friend who's a bassist, because he plays the bass so often, he strums very hard and the sound that comes out when he plays his classical guitar is very "tight" so not only guitar type, the sound depends on the person as well.

Stratocasters are the most common types, my friend who teaches me and his friend who teaches him Mesa Boogie are the best, yet, most expensive amps out there ... I know nuts about technical stuffs....
For first timers, like me, 2 to 300 is a good price range to get ready your cash for a relatively good guitar

Skills:
 - Rough draft on what you need to learn how to do
Alternate picking - up and down picking
Hammer ons
Pull Offs
Power Chords - takes some skill to keep your hands in the same position but move it around the frat board.
Practice: Some Click Five song but I use Second Hearbeat verse
Holding - The strings with the right intensity
Pinch Harmonics - Difficult! Holding is needed to achieve this
Palm mutes - A MUST learn.
Practice: Blinded in Chains pre-chorus
Controlling your amp - Volume and distortion people, volume and distortion...

Have you ever named or befriended an inanimate object? What did you call it?

Haha! If anyone is guilty of talking to an inanimate object it's me! My bag is bunny-shaped and I call it Morimori, everyday I call it out, I ask if it's hungry, how it feels, if my friends hit it I tell them mori is in pain and mori doesn't like them =(  And when they leave, i tell them mori says bye, I ask mori how she feels and stuff as well =)

From the tip of the ice-cream - J Rock

...Music - 30% of my life

My friends influence the music I listen to and thus, I have a list of things I like... and don't like. English pop makes me hurl, mainstream I like though, but what I love is J-rock and Gendou (anime music), as well as Metal, but mostly for the sick guitars and their solos (Children of Bodom, Sonic Syndicate) I'm currently learning electric guitar from various friends, but I suck at it, just started this year and my fingers aren't long enough XD But it's fun to watch them play and to try playing those songs.

My main topic this time will be on J-rock, I'm relatively new to this form of music, but I was immediately sucked into it, my best friend has been listening to it for quite a while now, and so she got her friend who went to Japan to get the "Hello Dear Numbers" concert on DVD for her, she brought it over, I listened to it and I was hooked.

Hello Dear Numbers DVD Cover

My focus on the big picture of J-Rock will be Visual Kei, now, what is Visual Kei? You may ask. Well, it is simply a term used to describe certain rock bands in Japan that dress in elaborate (often Goth/punk-influenced) outfits while performing. And why not? They look good doing it! Most of the time. The 3 bands I want to talk about today are the type that look good though =)

Alice Nine

The GazettE

Versailles

Alice Nine and The Gazette are both part of the PS Company and King Records, so they're friends, not rivals. =)

Alice Nine (
アリス九號., Alice Nine)
Formed in August of 2004, Alice Nine formed after the disbandment of the band Givuss; Shou and Tora joined with Hiroto, Saga and Nao, former band mates, to form a new band. Style-wise, they would be more inspirational than the other bands, lighter as well, is this what made them so quickly shoot to fame? Or was it Nao's cuteness? But seriously now. The band has changed over the years (They sounded heavier in the past) and been experimenting with different styles and synthesizers, they have taken a long road but it's paying off.

Members:
Shou - Vocals
Tora - Guitar
Hiroto - Guitar
Saga - Bass
Nao (Leader) - Drums

The GazettE
(
ガゼット, Gazetto)
The band formed in early 2002.  Founding members are Ruki, Uruha, and Reita, were formerly from another band. And Aoi and Yune, from another band, however, the latter quit and Kai was taken in. Their music is relatively more hardcore than Alice Nine, maybe they can be compared to as the A7X of J-Rock.

Members:
Ruki - Vocals
Uruha - Guitar
Aoi - Guitar
Reita - Bass
Kai (Leader) - Drums

While I'm on the topic of The GazettE, I'd like to comment on some of it's members, my best friend and I often compare them to Alice Nine, and one of the things we discussed was the lead vocals: As compared to Shou, we thought that Ruki had more skill.... And I'm a huge fan of Reita, look at my 30 pictures of Reita in my gallery if you don't believe =)

REITA!

Versaillies

A new up and coming band, formed recently in March 2007, Versailles was formed by Kamijo (Lareine), Hizaki (Sulfuric Acid) and Jasmine You (Jyakura). Later, Teru (Aikaryu) and Yuki (Sugar Trip), who were recommended by the "Rock May Kan", a venue in Tokyo, joined the band. Their very first (and only) album is "The Revenant Choir". On it's sound, because of it's newness, it's still pretty expirimental but it sounds rather like Children of Bodom to me =/

Members:

Kamijo - Vocals
Teru - Guitar
Hizaki - Guitar
Jasmine You - Bass
Yuki - Drums

Hizaki has been in the business for a very long and heading his own grace project. With so much experience under his belt... it's amazing how young he looks. And how he looks.

Hizaki, i'm serious.

Also on looks, look at the Teru, Looks like a doll...

Jrock to me is a mix of inspirational music and sick instrumental skills, the guitars, the drums, and frankly, I haven't heard a Bass solo in any other genre =D

J-Rock Tabs are pretty difficult to mind in text files, but J-ROCK Guiter&Bass Tabs tries and manages to do this pretty well, but I still can't find some songs, ah well, my friends are too into Metal to teach me J-rock anyway =X

Writer's Block: The sound of inspiration

What type of music inspires you?

View 502 Answers

There are 2 types of inspiration I find in music, the first is the music itself, the flow, the instruments, the vocals as a set. The second is the meaning of the song and whats behind it, the inspiration from the song in a sense inspires me. All types of music inspire me, just in different ways =)
